Paramedic Training in Alaska

If you are looking to become a paramedic in Alaska, you can find paramedic training programs at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Tanana Valley Campus (UAF TVC) and Kenai Peninsula College (KPC). They offer a basic program for EMT certification, which is required before you can undertake paramedic training, they also include an associate’s degree in emergency services with a concentration in emergency medicine.

Both schools offer paramedic training programs after the completion of EMT-training requirements as with most schools.

Paramedic is in the highest of levels of emergency medical training in Alaska.

The levels are:

• Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B)
• Emergency Medical Technician – Intermediate (EMT-I)
• Paramedic (EMT-P)

To get the basic education required to become a paramedic in Alaska. You must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.

EMT training does not require graduation from high school, some EMT courses are also offered at High school. But a person must be 18 years of age or older before they can be certified as an EMT. A person must be 19 years of age or older and be a high school graduate to become licensed in Alaska as an Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic(MICP).

Although there are no prerequisites to undertake EMT-I training in Alaska, but to enroll in an EMT-II course, a person must be certified as an EMT-I first and must have provided medical care to at least ten patients after becoming certified.

To enroll in an EMT-III course,  one must be certified as an EMT-II and have provided care to ten patients as an EMT-II and have successfully inserted needles into the veins of ten patients’. The applicant must have completed the 10 required venipunctures, eight of which must have been with catheter covered needles, within 30 days after completion of the EMT-II course.

To enroll in a MICP(Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic) course, a person must hold credentials from either the state or the National Registry of EMTs (http://www.nremt.org) at any level.

Certification as an EMT and licensure as an MICP require successful completion of written and practical examinations.

Those who successfully completed EMT and MICP courses in Alaska, are eligible to become credentialed by the National Registry of EMTs at the appropriate level.

Basic Summary of Training
