A Paramedic is the highest level within the field of EMTs in the state of New York.

The levels are:

  • Certified First Responder (CFR)
  • Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B)
  • Advanced Emergency Medical Technician – Intermediate (AEMT-I)
  • Advanced Emergency Medical Technician – Critical Care (AEMT-CC)
  • Advanced Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (AEMT-P)

One can find paramedic training programs being offered at many 2-year community colleges, some of these includes Manhattan Community College, LaGuardia College and Westchester Community College

You must first become a Certified Medical First Responder (CFR) and complete the EMT-B and AEMT-I before you can enrol in paramedic training.

 

 

The requirements for CFR are:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Submit a completed application for Emergency Medical Services Certification (DOH-65).
  • Successful finish a NY State CFR course.
  • Pass the exam on both written and practical.
  • Be at least 16 years old by the end of the month in taking the exam.

After becoming a certified CFR you can then enrol in EMT-basic training before you can enrol in paramedic training.

The requirements to enrol in paramedic training programs are:

  • You must be qualified EMT-Intermediate and EMT-basic.
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Possess a CPR-card

During the training program you can expect to:

  • Undergo a 320 hours of training and 96 hours of clinical training.
  • You must serve an internship involving clinical rotations and ambulance runs.
