By passing the NREMT exam, an EMT and Paramedic is licensed to practise in all states which utilizes the NREMT exam. The EMT-C exam is only held once a month, please contact the state’s EMS offices for details. If you wish to attend the NREMT exam, you will have to visit the NREMT official website and sign up for the next exam.

Before you can enter a paramedic training program you will have to meet certain requirements.

The requirements you need to meet to enter a paramedic training program are:

A paramedic can be considered as a doctor, who saves peoples life during an emergency situation. It’s in fact a challenging job being a paramedic. All of the hospitals in UK, hire paramedics to extend their current medical emergency services. Being a paramedic is really a tough and challenging job, it’s different compared to all the other medical careers, because of its abnormal hours and constant stress.

You may get recruited by a paramedic consultancy in your area, but you must fulfill certain requirements. In order to become a paramedic you must complete paramedic training course, as well as several tests, which are organized in UK.

You need to pass these tests with good marks if you wish to get recruited in the top hospitals in the cities. There are a few conditions and terms or qualifications for being a paramedic:

You need to be registered with the Health Professional Council (HPC). Clinical training is usually required, when it comes to becoming a paramedic. The HPC has to offer the candidate a certificate after the completion of the training program.

There are numerous universities which provide degree courses for paramedics approved by the HPC. Your entry requirements may also rely on the qualification you desire to have, it includes 5GCSES, Mathematics, English, Science, Life Science and Natural Science.

Technical level entry can also be achieved by joining the ambulance services as a Care Assistant. Work experience as an Ambulance Technician will be accepted for paramedic training programs.

There are also a handful of other requirements, which are necessary to become a paramedic. For example you need to be 18 years of age

The Process of Becoming a Paramedic in the UK

For anybody who is thinking about having a career in the Ambulance Service as a Paramedic, there is a difficult and thorough selection process to take on. You must successfully pass each stage to become a paramedic within the UK.

The majority of NHS Trusts uses numerous key stages such as an application form, written tests, driving assessment, literacy tests, an occupational health assessment and lastly interviews. When completing the paramedic application form it is vital that the candidate includes lots of examples and experiences where they are able to meet the qualities which are necessary to perform the role in a professional and competent manner.

Several people fail this first stage mainly due to an inability to follow along with the guidance notes which comes as part of the application form. As soon as someone has successfully finished the application form stage they’ll be invited to go to an evaluation center. Applicants who wish to prepare properly for this stage should concentrate their efforts on numeracy tests, verbal reasoning tests, a comprehensive knowledge of the Highway Code last but not least their literacy skills.

For the duration of the interview, the panel may wish to see further experiences of where the applicant can complement the person specification for the job of a paramedic. Each and every UK based Ambulance Service includes a set of ‘Values‘. It is crucial that the applicant learns these values ahead of the interview. Additionally it is important that the applicant provides proof of where he or she has worked either in the local community or within a diverse workforce. Any additional qualifications may also help the process.

We hope this article has helped give you a better idea on how to become a paramedic. For more information we recommend you contact your local hospital or educational facility.

For more information please visit the South Carolina EMS website to learn more. To learn more about the certification process you may take a look at the South Carolina EMT Certification Process. It details the whole EMT certification process if you should be in doubt of anything.

A paramedic training program can be found at most colleges, universities, technical schools and certain hospitals. We have listed below two educational institutions you may want to look at. A paramedic training program will take around two years to fully complete. You will go through at least 1000 hours worth of training and you will also be required to do an internship to gain work experience.

As soon as you have completed the paramedic training program, you will have to pass the NREMT practical and written exam. The written exam is actually a computer exam comprised of a number of multiple choice questions. The number of questions is will depend in your answers as it’s a computer adaptive test. This means the next question you will get depends on the answers you gave prior. The computer will continue to give you questions which will be more difficult and adapt to your level.

Utilizing the NREMT practice exams that we have here online will help prepare you for the real thing. Questions are in the exact same multiple choice format except with our practice NREMT exams you can choose how many questions you want delivered at a time AND we give you the answers and rationale behind each questions.

The practical EMT exams will be conducted via the hands on stations, where you will need to display the skills which you have learnt. The NREMT will have 15 Basic skills that you need to master. You will however only be asked to perform around 6 of these basic skills. It’s recommended that you come well prepared in all the skills.

As soon as you have passed the NREMT Exam, you can fill out an EMT Paramedic application form and submit it to the EMS offices in South Carolina (SC). It usually takes around two weeks for your application to arrive to SC and then another 2 weeks of processing the paperwork until you can receive your South Carolina EMT certification / licensing documentation.

The paramedic profession can be a very rewarding and satisfying one indeed. It will take you around 1000 hours or two years to fully complete a paramedic training program. You will have to go through intense medical training as well as an internship. Once you done you will have to take a licensing exam, before you can practice as a paramedic. After all that work you are probably expecting a rewarding job with action packed action. The reality is that most of the time your work tasks are pretty mundane. You will also work during irregular hours. You’ll have to be standby for any emergency calls, during any hours of the day. You will have to put your job first, over family and sometimes even yourself. You will face physical straining task and can be susceptible, to many on the job injuries.

The paramedic profession has a very high burnout rate because of the above-mentioned aspects. Many people come into the profession, not fully aware of what the job really entails. This is usually the main reason why you see paramedics quit their jobs as little as 1-2 years into their careers. Most paramedics opt to change to other careers, currently you can find programs like paramedic to RN bridge programs, which allows paramedics to become an RN (registered nurse) by completing a training program.

If you still wish to pursue a career as a paramedic, you will have to have the above-mentioned things in mind. Be prepared to a hectic and stressful job. Be prepared for unpredictable job schedules, as well as doing 24-hour shifts. Realize the job is not all about action packed emergency calls, most of the time you will have to respond to mundane calls.

We hope you gained insight into the paramedic profession, we hope the best for you and your future.

For a paramedic who is looking to become a RN (Registered Nurse) would result in a increase in both medical responsibilities as well as their salary. It’s also not unheard of that a RN can earn twice as much as the paramedic average salary.

CPR is technique used to revive a dying patient when the patient has either stopped breathing or the heart has stopped beating.

The CPR can be performed manually with no tools. The simple use of chest compressions while breathing air down the patients air pathways can often be enough EMT professionals however also use medical equipments with CPR, those tools can perform electrical shocks, which purpose is to try and start the patient’s heart.

CPR must always be performed by a trained and certified specialist. You can find certification courses being offered by The American Red Cross. Once you have completed the course successfully you will receive documentation of your certification in a form of a small card which can easily be placed in a wallet.

So just how “in shape” do you have to be in order to become a paramedic, and pass the physical examination?

Before you can enrol in a paramedic training program, you must pass a physical exam determining if you can physically perform the required tasks of a EMT Paramedic.

If you fail in the physical exam and is deemed not suited, you can not enrol in the paramedic training program.

The physical exam

You will be tested in following areas in the physical exam:

Cardiac

Respiratory

Neurological

Gastrointestinal

Trauma

You will have to provide your medical history and inform the examiner of any discomforts. The examiner will check for lung sounds, hearts sounds, pedal edema and presacral edema. Your age will also have a say in the PE exam however if you are in a good physical shape it’s hardly too important.

There are no sure fire way in determining if you are suited or not. It will be a verdict made by the examiner on the day.

However one can expect to be at least to be in a decent physical shape to perform such tasks as:

Lifting patients, lot’s of walking, carrying a medic bag around and working during bad weather conditions.

A paramedic also works on average 40 hours a week and at times during irregular hours.

If you can see yourself being able to handle those tasks then you may enter the Physical exam confidently.

EMT training is your first step in pursuing a career as a paramedic. Before you can even start training as a paramedic, you must have completed an EMT training program. You must be person who thrives under high pressure situations.

You must not be put off by the sight of blood or unsightly scenes if you want to become a EMT or Paramedic. An EMT is usually a person who cares or have a lot of empathy towards others, since it’s you job to put others first. EMT generally responds to 911 calls and are with the paramedics the first at scene. They provide pre-hospital medical care and can often be the difference between life and death.

Your first step in becoming an EMT is to take an EMT training program which will certify you as an EMT. You can find such programs in most 2-year community colleges, universities or technical schools.

EMT training requirements are:

High school diploma, GED or equivalent

At least 18 years of age in the month you become certified.

Drug test, including screening for tuberculosis and hepatitis B

A physical examination

Criminal Background Check

If you get accepted, you would want to know that there are 3 levels of EMTs. The levels are: EMT-basic, EMT-intermediate and EMT-paramedic. The levels varies in the amount of training that each level requires of the candidate.

EMT-basic will provide the candidate the fundamental teachings on how to provide emergency medical care. All higher level EMTs are trained from the basics taught in EMT-basic. EMT-basic training classes will cost around 400-900$, the duration varies from 4 to 6 months.

EMT-intermediate is the next level and expands further on the teachings in EMT-basic. You can expect to be required to complete 250-300 training hours. After the program you will have the ability to perform intravenous cannulation, endotracheal intubation and administer a selection of medicine.

The highest level of EMTs is the mentioned EMT Paramedic. It will take 2-semesters to complete, around 2 years. You can expect to have to go through 1,500-2000 hours of training. You will be able to perform all the duties of lower level EMTs as well as dealing with airway management, oxygen therapy, shock treatment and handling sophisticated medical tools. A Paramedic is usually the leader in ambulance runs and have a lower level EMT as their partner.

For paramedic training outside of The United states, one is faced with different challenges. First of all every country have their special requirements for getting accepted into an educational institution which provides paramedic training programs. Not only will there be different requirements but also different curriculum and qualification levels.

Therefor if you are a certified paramedic in another country, it will not mean that you can automatically get accepted and work as one, in another country.

For individuals looking to become a paramedic outside of the US, it’s is recommended that they contact their local educational institution since they will be able to best inform you of your options. Some countries provide paramedic training information on the world wide web so do not hesitate in searching there too.

The best advice we can give you is:

1. Search for paramedic training information in your country online.

2. Contact your local educational institution or education offices for information.

3. Meet the following requirements required of you to get accepted into a paramedic training program.

4. Apply to the paramedic training program and successfully complete it.

Are EMT Paramedic License recognized internationally?

The answer is no. Since there are such a wide range of differences of what is considered a paramedic in different countries, it makes it impossible to actually have an international recognized license.

The paramedic training programs expands on the EMT-basic and EMT-intermediate training. Basic EMTs usually train around 120 – 150 hours of training, while paramedics have received training hours of 1,200 to 1,800 hours. They also reward paramedics with a 2 year degree.

While a paramedic can do all the duties of the lower level EMTs. The biggest difference between a paramedic and an EMT, is the paramedic’s ability to perform additional medical skills such as: breaking the skin, administering intravenous lifelines, advanced airway management, providing medication and handling sophisticated medical tools.

A paramedic also earn more than an EMT. The paramedic can expect to earn in average around $36.000 annually (Some states pay even more – visit paramedic salary to learn more).

In order to become a paramedic. You must first complete emt-basic training and become certified emt. Afterwards you need to complete the paramedic training program and pass the NREMT exam. Some states however uses their own state approved exam.

The requirements to enrol in paramedic training programs are:

You must be qualified EMT-Intermediate and EMT-basic.

Be at least 18 years old

Possess a CPR-card

Possess a valid driver’s license

During the training program you can expect to:

Undergo a 320 hours of training and 96 hours of clinical training.

You must serve an internship involving clinical rotations and ambulance runs for at least 1 semester.

Schools

You can find paramedic training programs being offered at most 2-year community colleges, universities and technical schools. They offer certification programs and some also offer a two-year associate degree.

The Associate’s degree can give you an advantage in entering better schools at higher institutions of learning.

Currently 46 states uses the NREMT exam to certify and license paramedics and EMTs in their state. The rest of them uses their own state approved exams to certify and license Paramedics and EMTs. The state approved exams are fairly similar to what you can expect in the NREMT exam.
