The majority of states have the same requirements when it comes to entering a paramedic training program. Some states vary in terms of how they certify and license their EMTs and Paramedics.

How to Become an EMT Paramedic

First you need to fulfill certain training program requirement to get accepted into an EMT paramedic training program. You can find training programs being offered at most community colleges, universities, technical schools and special hospitals. All states will require the candidate to pass a certification and licensing exam.

Once you fulfil the training requirements, you can enter an EMT paramedic training program. The training program or course, will take around two years to complete. The two years will be spread across four semesters, where you spend one of them during an internship at a clinical facility.

Once you have completed the training program, you will be required to take The National Registry for Emergency Technicians exam, also known as the NREMT exam. The exam will consist of both a written and practical exam which will be conducted in a total of two days. You must pass both of these exams in order to become licensed and certified. The written exam consists of a multiple choice question given by a computer, which adapts according to your responses. The practical exam will require you to demonstrate certain medical skills for an instructor, who will evaluate you, until he deems you’ve passed the exam.

After passing the NREMT exam, you must fill out and submit an EMT application form to your local EMS offices. You must include proper documents along with your application form to avoid any delays.

The Different Levels of EMT Training

If you wish to become an EMT, you first need to meet the requirements of an EMT training program. The requirements may vary depending on what level of EMT training you are trying to enroll in, and what state you wish to be certified in.

The usual EMT requirements you need to fulfill are:

- Be at least 18 years of age
- Possess a High school diploma or a GED
- Have a clean criminal background
- Possess a valid Driver’s license
- Possess a CPR certification card

There are 3 key EMT training levels. Those levels are EMT basic, EMT intermediate and EMT Paramedic. In order to progress to higher levels you need to fulfill all the requirements mentioned above. EMT basic training will take around 100 hours to complete, then you will be required to take a certification exam.

EMT intermediate training will take around 200 hours to complete, and it will also require a certification exam. This level will build upon the basic training of the EMT-basic level.

EMT Paramedic is the highest level within EMT training. It will take around 1500 hours of training to complete this course. You will also be required to do an internship including ambulance runs, clinical rotations and simple work around the medical center.
